ELLA – SHE

Ella means “she” in English. 

Ella is a pronoun. A pronoun is a word that substitutes the name of a person, an animal, or an object. 

Look!

● María es mi mejor amiga. (María is my best friend.)

● Ella es mi mejor amiga. (She is my best friend.)

In the example above, ella substitutes the name of a person.

Now, let’s see how ella substitutes an animal.

● La gata tiene hambre. Ella quiere comer.

○ The cat is hungry. It wants to eat.

In English, the pronoun “it” is used to substitute animals.

In Spanish, ella substitutes feminine animals and objects that are considered feminine.
